Text: The Americans consider independence to be a highly virtuous personal trait. Within their social code a person who needs others is considered weak. American parents begin training their children not to need people within their first few months of life. At night, they place their children in special cages such as this one, then leave the cages in isolated locations so that the children cannot see their parents or feel the warmth of their bodies. A few small objects believed to have calming powers are commonly found in the cages. ©
