Journey is a composition of twelve carved wooden blocks. The twisting and overlapping design passes between blocks and extends beyond their edges. Various colors of paint (mostly blues and greens) were rubbed into the carved areas, emphasizing the texture and creating a subtle blend of colors.
Journey is one of the last available pieces in a series of fourteen similar sculptures. The series was inspired by wooden printing blocks. Years ago, I had carved some blocks for printing. After using them for their intended purpose, I set them on my desk. I came to appreciate them as small sculptures, removed from their original intent. The residual inks in the carved areas contrasted nicely with the exposed wood. After having those blocks on my desk for years, I decided to put that effect to use in a wall sculpture, and the series began.
