Text:
The Americans have a complex and sometimes contradictory mythology. Their stories of heroes and supernatural beings are recorded onto scrolls such as these. Groups of Americans gather in special story houses where they make small offerings and learn the stories. The characters in these stories provide models of appropriate behavior. These two scrolls depicting courtship and conflict resolution are typical. There are only a couple of dozen frequently-told stories, but the story-makers create abundant variations by re-arranging and embellishing them. ©
