“Hatchling” began as a non-representational sculpture, but, as the design evolved, it began to make me think of an egg, then an emerging bird, or an opening flower. At the same time, it suggests broken links in a chain. As I worked on it through a summer of Black Lives Matter demonstrations, it’s somewhat bird-like form led me to think of the West African story of the Sankofa bird, looking back to remember it’s past as it moves into the future. I wasn’t trying to evoke that image; but it is hard for me to see it another way now.
