Twister is a very gestural sculpture. Its creation was a departure from my usual approach, which involves a lot of preliminary design work. This sculpture was designed in motion. I began the piece by welding just a few sections of aluminum together and when I stepped back I saw the potential for a twisting form, so I continued with that in mind. As the form grew it took on somewhat of a funnel shape, thus the name Twister. I strove to create a strong sense of motion–directional, but a little chaotic. I wanted to capture the feeling of swirling wind, bending trees, and lightning.
